Lewis and Hitchcock, Inc. - Pipe Organ Builders Since 1915
New Organs

Strasburg Presbyterian Church

Strasburg, VA - Opus 273, 1994

The Strasburg Presbyterian Church has a historic building built in 1830 which was used as a hospital during the Civil War. In 1928 a Moller tubular-pneumatic organ was installed in the front of the church, in the Apse that had been added years before. When this organ became unreliable, the church signed a contract with the original builder for a new organ. The church had paid half the cost of the new organ when the firm declared bankruptcy.

They then contracted with Lewis & Hitchcock to build a new organ, keeping the historic facade of non-speaking pipes. Four sets of pipes from the 1928 organ were retained and revoiced as a part of the new organ, as was the interior framework.

The tonal design emphasizes flexibility. The Great Principal and Pedal Bourdon are exposed, with the remainder of the pipework under expression. There is a full combination action with memory levels available. There are two reed stops, giving the organist more choices in registration. The organ has stops from all families of organ tone, so that music of all periods may be performed. The organ was dedicated on October 16, 1994, with a recital by Dr. Steven Cooksey of Shenandoah Conservatory performing.
