Rebuilt Organs

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church

College Park, MD - Opus 267, 1990, new console and digital stops, 2005

St. Andrew’s Church built their building in 1930 and contracted with Lewis & Hitchcock for Opus 164 in 1930, a two manual organ of eight ranks of pipes. As part of the centennial Celebration in 1990, the church awarded Lewis & Hitchcock the contract for Opus 267, a new three manual organ that would retain several ranks of the 1930 organ.

In 2005 a donor approached Dale Krider, Organist/Choirmaster, with a desire to add a set of Tower Chimes to the organ, plus whatever else would be useful to him. The 1990 console was not designed to be enlarged, so the plans were drawn up for a new three manual drawknob console, with an integral dolly system, which would include the Tower Chimes, playing from the tower in the rear of the church, as well as a number of new digital stops throughout the organ.

The Walker firm again provided the digital stops, many of which are copies of stops in notable organs throughout the country. The Tower Chimes are copies of Deagan Tower Chimes, which most organists know through Virgil Fox’s use of them in the Carillon de Westminster by Vierne, in the famous recording made at the Wanamaker store. A new Festival Trumpet provides a blaze of glory at the appropriate time. Other stops fill out the various divisions, including 32’ stops in the Pedal.

The new console has the control panel hidden behind a sliding panel. This controls the 224 memory levels, Transposer and other accessories.

The organ has been hailed as spectacular, and is often featured in regional events and master classes.
