Greater First Baptist Church
Washington, DC - Rebuilt by Lewis and Hitchcock
The Greater First Baptist Church occupies a building that was built for the Fourth Presbyterian Church. That church purchased a Kilgen organ in 1926, which was enlarged in 1944 and rededicated by Virgil Fox when he was stationed at Walter Reed Army Hospital during World War II. Fourth Presbyterian moved to Bethesda Maryland in 1960, and the large building was sold to the Greater First Baptist Church. Our firm has maintained the organ since it was installed.
In 2003 there was huge storm that blew off part of the roof over the left organ chamber, which contains the Choir division and part of the Pedal division. The Pedal Open Wood Diapason pipes were soaked with water and they and their windchests were ruined. Luckily the water did not come in over the Choir windchests. We installed a Walker digital stop to replace these huge pipes, and were impressed with the quality of sound and the stability of the tuning.
In the summer of 2007 the air conditioning system malfunctioned, pouring water into the right organ chamber, which contains the Swell and Great divisions. One of two Swell windchests was soaked, along with the Pedal Gedeckt, and the water ruined the Harp in the Great. Again we were able to use Walker digital stops to replace these, and have been very pleased with the tone and the tuning stability.
